Anderson Cooper broke down in tears as he read the names of the 49 Orlando nightclub victims on Monday night. Cooper, who came out publicly four years ago,
was reporting live for CNN in Florida as he struggled to hide his emotions. “They are more than a list of names,” the 49-year-old said as his voice began to wobble. “They are people who loved and who were loved.” He then read out the names of the victims who were gunned down at Pulse nightclub on Sunday night by Omar Mateen, who Cooper refused to name.
“In the next two hours we want to try to keep the focus where we think it belongs, on the people whose lives were cut short,” he said. “Edward Sotomayor Jr. He worked at a travel agency that catered to the gay community. His family says he was witty, charming,” he continued before pausing to stop again. “And that he always left things better than he found them. He was 34 years old.”
The faces and names of those killed also appeared at the bottom of the screen during the touching seven-minute tribute.
