At least 24 police officers were injured in an overnight riot that broke out in Memphis on Wednesday.
Mayor Jim Strickland said 6 officers were taken to the hospital during a large protest shortly after federal officers fatally shot a 20-year-old black man while trying to take him into custody.
US Marshals shot a 20-year-old whose identity wasn’t immediately released, while trying to arrest him on a warrant around 7 p.m.
A crowd of about 300 people descended on city streets soon after, some throwing rocks and spitting at police, the mayor said. Police decked out in riot gear responded by spraying tear gas.
Brandon Webber was killed by officers with the US Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force after they say he “rammed his vehicle into the officers’ vehicles multiple times trying to flee. He had been wanted by authorities on multiple unspecified warrants.
