Miami police captain Javier Ortiz was suspended after he told commissioners he was not Hispanic but that he was a black male.
Ortiz, a captain of Hispanic origin whose controversial and provocative social media posts over the years have drawn the ire of his bosses and the community and who rose to oversee the department’s SWAT operations, will be sidelined indefinitely, said Miami’s Deputy Police Chief Ronald Papier.
The captain’s suspension is “pending an investigation,”. He refused to go into detail about why exactly Ortiz, a former president of the city’s Fraternal Order of Police, was being investigated.
